कमला ब्या होने के बाद ससुराल आ गई, पति शहर में नौकरी करता था,तो कमला को भी लगता था की, अब वो भी शहर जा सकेगी, आजकल की चेली बटियों का मोह , शहर से कुछ ज्यादा भी रहता है, ऐसा ही कमला के साथ भी था, कुछ महीनों बाद जब उसका पति घर आया तो, उसने पति से उसे भी शहर साथ ले जाने को कहा, पर उसके पति ने, इस बार की जगह अगली बार शहर ले जाने को कहा।
कमला ने मन मार कर किसी तरह खुद को समझा लिया, इस बीच दो साल तक उसका पति घर ही नही आया,वो बस हर महीने वहीं से पैसें भेज देता था, पति के दो साल से घर ना आने वजह से कमला नाराज थी ,इस कारण कमला अब चिडचिडी भी हो गई थी, उसे लगता था की उसका पति उसे शहर ही नही ले जाना चाहता ओर इसीलिए दो साल से घर ही नही आ रहा, बची खुची कसर गाँव की कुछ महिलाओं ने कमला को भड़का कर पूरी कर दी।
कमला की चिढन अब उसके ससुराल वालों पर,निकल रही थी, वो सास ससुर, ननद व देवर की उपेक्षा करने लगी थी, इस कारण घर का माहौल खराब होता जा रहा था।
कमला के ससुराल वाले भले लोग थे, वो कमला की उपेक्षा सह कर भी चुप थे,कमला की सास ने कमला की ननद को कह दिया था, तेर बौजी जो कों कोण दिये, जवाब जण दिये, उक काम काज में हाथ बटाये, अपण ओर अपण भाई लीजी स्कूल ली जाणे ही रोट साग बना लिये।
कमला के ससुराल वाले लगातार कोशिश कर रहे थे की, घर का माहौल ठीक रहे, उनका पूरे गाँव में इस बात के लिये नाम भी था की, ये घर सबसे ज्यादा संस्कारित है, पर कमला के कारण घर का माहौल अब बिगड़ने लगा था।
कमला के परिवार से चिढने वाले भी कई थे गाँव में, जो कमला को उल्टा सीधी बात करके ,घर का माहौल खराब करने के इच्छुक थे, ओर कमला उनको अच्छा जरिया नजर आ रही थी।
कमला की सास से चिढने वाली चंपा तो जिसमें सबसे आगे थी, वो कमला के कान भरती रहती थी, एक दिन तो उसने कमला को यहाँ तक कह दिया की, मै कें लागनो तेर खसम क ,शहर में कोई स्याणी दगड चक्कर छ, तैभे तो न ली जाणे त्वैकें अपण दगड ,बस ये सुनते ही कमला का दिमाग ओर खराब हो गया, उसने घर आते ही, पूरा घर सर पर उठा लिया, सबको उल्टा सीधा बोलने लगी, उसकी सास हाथ जोड़ कर बोलने लगी, ईजा येस्ये न बुला ,गों भर में हँसी है जाली परिवारेक ,आजतक हमर जो नाम छी, सब खराब है जाल, त्वैकें शहर जाण छ तू लह जा, मै च्याल दगड बात कर बेर, त्वैकं उक दगड भिजवा दयौण।
कमला को जैसे तैसे बडी मुश्किल से ,शाँत कराया उसकी सास ने, दूसरे दिन उसकी सास मोबाईल फोन रखने वाले, बिशन मास्टर साहब के वहाँ गई ,ओर उनसे विनती की के ,च्याल से बात करवा दो,बिशन मास्टर साहब ने फोन से बात करवा दी, कमला की सास ने अपने च्याल को सारी बात बतलाई, ओर जल्दी से जल्दी आकर कमला को ले जाने को बोला, उनके च्याल ने स्तिथि की नाजुकता को देखते हुये, अगले हफ्ते तक आने के लिये बोल दिया।
अगले हफ्ते कमला का पति घर आया, उसने कमला से बात करी ओर उसे खूब समझाने की कोशिश की के अभी मेरे हालात ऐसे नही हैं की, मैं कमरा लेकर तुझे रख सकूँ, अगर रखता हूँ तो घर में खर्चा पानी नही भेज पाऊँगा ,कुड़ी ( मकान ) को ठीक करने ओर शादी करने में कर्ज लिया था, वो भी अभी नही चुका है, तुझे ले गया तो ये नही चुक पायेगा ,इज्जत खराब हो जायेगी, इसलिए बात को समझ ओर साथ चलने की जिद छोड़ दे।
कमला तो जैसे जिद करके बैठ गई थी, उसने अपने पति को साफ कह दिया, ली जाँ छा तो ली जाओ, नतर मै कें अपण म्यात पुजा दियो, मै न रौनी अब यौ घर में, ये सुनकर अंत में कमला का पति थक हार कर उसे शहर ले जाने के लिये राजी हो गया।
कमला अब बेहद खुश थी की , वो शहर जो जा रही थी, उसे लग रहा था, शहर की बेहद खूबसूरत जिंदगी का वो खूब आनंद लेगी, पर उसे पता नही था की दूर के ढोल सुहावने लगते हैं, पर हकीकत में ऐसा होता नही।
वो दिन भी आ गया जब कमला शहर के लिये रवाना हो गई, केमो की बस में खिड़की की साईड में बैठ कर कमला बेहद खुश दिख रही थी, उसकी मन की मुराद जो पूरी हो गई थी, रास्ते भर वो ख्यालों में खोई सी दिख रही थी, शायद शहरी जिंदगी के बारे में सोचने में मशगूल थी, कुछ घन्टो के सफर के बाद वो लोग हल्द्वानी बस अड्डे पर पहुँच गये, ओर वहाँ से उन्हें दिल्ली जाने वाली बस पकड़ ली, अलसुबह वो पहुँच गये दिल्ली।
कमला बड़ी बड़ी बिल्डिंग, बडी बडी रोड देख कर अचंभित थी, आजतक उसने कभी शहर नही देखा था, बस अड्डे से वो लोग डी टी सी की बस में बैठकर शक्करपुर उतर गये, शक्करपुर तक भी ठीक ठाक था, वही बडी बड़ी बिल्डिंग, वही बडी बडी रोड, पर असल सफर तो अब शुरू होना था कमला का, ओर उसकी शुरुआत हुईं मंडावली तक पैदल यात्रा से।
मंडावली की तंग गलियों से होते हुये कमला जब गुजरी तो, उसको समझ नही आ रहा था की, ये कैसी जगह है, जहाँ मात्र 10 फुट की सड़कें, दड़बेनुमा 25 - 50 गज के मकान बने हैं,वो सोचने लगी क्या ये भी दिल्ली ही है ,कुछ देर चलने के बाद आखिरकार वो उस मकान में पहुँचे, जहाँ कमला के पति ने किराये पर कमरा लिया था, कमरा क्या था, 6 बाई 8 की एक कोठरी, छत पर लोहे की चद्दर डली हुईं थी।
गरमी के दिन थे ओर कमरा बेहद तप रहा था, ऊपर से पँखा गरम हुईं टीन की चद्दर की तपिश को नीचे भेज रहा था, कमला का गर्मी के मारे बुरा हाल हो चुका था, उसे पहाड़ की ठंडी हवा याद आ रही थी ,उसका खूबसूरत ओर तड़क भड़क शहर का सपना ये देख कर चूर हो गया था, जिसमें तो ये उसकी शुरुआत थी।
जैसे तैसे दिन कटा, शाम होते होते थोड़ी तपन कम हुईं ,पर अचानक बिजली चली गई ,ओर पँखा बंद होने से उमस बढ़ गई ,कमला पसीने से तरबतर हो गई, उसे लगने लगा जैसे उसकी जान निकल जायेगी, वो समझ नही पा रही थी की ये सब कैसे हो रहा है शहर में भी, जबकि लाईट तो गाँवो में जाती है, वो सोच रही थी, ऐसे कैसे रह पायेगी यहाँ,कमला एक दिन में ही परेशान हो चुकी थी।
इधर कमला के आने से खर्चा बढ़ गया था, 3 हजार रुपये तो किराया लग रहा था, बिजली पानी का अलग, घर के राशन में ही दो ढाई हजार खर्च हो रहे थे, जबकि घर में सामान के नाम पर कुछ बर्तन ओर गद्दे के अलावा कुछ नही था, कमला ये सब देख कर हैरान थी की कैसी जिंदगी है शहरों की, इधर खर्चे बढ़ने से कमला का पति परेशान था, उसने खर्चे पूरा करने के लिये डबल शिफ्ट में काम करना शुरू कर दिया ,इसके कारण उसका स्वास्थ्य खराब रहने लगा, कमला की जिद ने, सबकुछ अस्त व्यस्त कर दिया था।
गरमी ओर उमस ने कमला का हाल बेहाल कर दिया था, गाँव में चैन से रहने वाली कमला को गाँव याद आ रहा था, वो तुलना करने लगी की, कहाँ गाँव की ठंडी हवा, ओर कहाँ ये गरम थपेड़े, कहाँ गाँव का बड़ा मकान ओर कहाँ ये दड़बेनुमा कमरा ,वो सोचने लगी यहाँ से तो अच्छा गाँव ही था,बेकार ही जिद की, ऊपर से कोई बचत नही हो पा रही, ना ही गाँव को पैसे भेज पा रहे हैं,खाली लोगों की सिखाई में आकर, घर वालों से लड़ी ओर उनकी नजर में बुरी भी बन गई।
मात्र 6 महीने में ही कमला ओर उसके पति सहित उसके परिवार की आर्थिक हालत काफी खराब हो चुकी थी, अब ना ये दिल्ली का खर्चा ठीक से उठा पा रहे थे, ना ही गाँव में लिये कर्ज को चुका पा रहे थे, इधर कमला का पति डबल शिफ्ट में काम करके, इस स्तिथि से निपटने की जद्दोजहद कर रहा था तो, उधर गाँव में कमला के बूढ़े ससुर दूसरों के खेतों में हल जोत कर, इस स्तिथि से निजात पाने की कोशिश कर रहे थे, कमला का छोटा सा देवर भी पढ़ाई छोड़ कर गाँव में मजदूरी करने लगा था।
अगर कमला अपने घर वालों का कहना मान लेती ओर कुछ दिनों बाद शहर जाती तो,ये हालात ना होते, इस तरह कमला की जिद ने सारे घर को अस्त व्यस्त कर दिया था।
