उत्तराखण्ड के चार धामों में से एक गंगोत्री धाम के कपाट जब शीतकाल में बंद हो जाते हैं , तब माँ गंगा की उत्सव डोली इस कपाट बंदी के बाद शीतकालीन पड़ाव मुखीमठ (मुखवा) के लिए रवाना होती है , ओर 6 महीने तक अब मुखवा स्थित गंगा मंदिर में ही मां गंगा की पूजा अर्चना होती है ।

परंपरागत ढोल दमाऊं की थाप के साथ तीर्थ पुरोहित गंगा की डोली को लेकर शीतकालीन प्रवास मुखवा गांव के लिए पैदल रवाना होते हैं ।

माँ गंगा मुखवा गांव के मंदिर में बिराजती है , यह गाँव गंगोत्री धाम के तीर्थ पुरोहितों का भी गाँव है। माँ गंगा की भोगमूर्ति के इस शीतकालीन प्रवास स्थल को मुखीमठ भी कहा जाता है। मुखवा गांव उत्तरकाशी जिला मुख्यालय से 78 की दूरी पर स्थित है। यह गांव सड़क मार्ग से भी जुड़ा हुआ है।

इस गांव में साढ़े चार सौ परिवार रहते हैं। यहां परंपरागत शिल्प से तैयार लकड़ी के मकान अपनी खूबसूरती के लिए प्रसिद्ध है। मान्यताओं के अनुसार, वानप्रस्थ के दौरान विचरण करते हुये पांडव मुखवा गाँव पहुंचे थे और यहां पर उनका प्रवास रहा था। मार्कंडेय ऋषि ने तप कर इसी गांव में अमरत्व का वरदान हासिल किया था

इसके अतिरिक्त यहाँ पर विश्व प्रसिद्ध सेब की विशिष्ट प्रजाति पाई जाती है , जिसे विल्सन सेब कहा जाता है । जो फेड्रिक ई विल्सन पर रखा गया।

यहाँ के आसपास इलाकों में उत्तराखण्ड के सबसे घने जंगल हैं , जहाँ देवदार ओर भोजपत्र के वृक्ष बहुतायत में मौजूद हैं , इन्हीं जंगलों में से कई छोटी मोटी धारायें निकल कर भागीरथी नदी में समा जाती हैं , यहाँ की जलधाराओं व झरनों की वजह से इस इलाके की खूबसूरती देखने लायक है। साथ ही साल भर बर्फ से लकदक चोटियाँ मन मोह लेती है।

ये वो है जगह जहाँ हिमालय का नयनाभिराम दर्शन होते हैं साथ ही जैव विविधता का आनंद भी प्राप्त किया जा सकता

इसी इलाके में सिनेमा जगत में ख्याति प्राप्त पिक्चर राम तेरी गंगा मैली को भी फिल्माया गया था।

Mukhwa Village

When the valleys of Gangotri Dham, one of the four dhams of Uttarakhand, are closed during the winter, then the festival Ganga Doli of Maa Ganga leaves for the winter stop Mukhimath (Mukhwa) after this kapat bandh, and for 6 months now Ganga situated in Mukhwa Worship of mother Ganga is done in the temple itself.

With the beat of the traditional Dhol Damaun, the Tirtha Purohit leaves for the winter migration to the village of Mukhwa, taking the Ganga Doli.

Ma Ganga resides in the temple of Mukhwa village, this village is also the village of pilgrim priests of Gangotri Dham. This winter migration destination of Mother Ganga's Bhogamurti is also called Mukhimath. Mukhwa village is located at a distance of 78 from Uttarkashi district headquarters. The village is also connected by road.

Four and a half hundred families live in this village. Here the traditional houses crafted wooden houses are famous for their beauty. According to beliefs, the Pandavas came to Mukhwa village while wandering during Vanaprastha and they were staying here. Markandeya Rishi meditated and got the boon of immortality in this village.

The areas around here are the most dense forests of Uttarakhand, where cedar and bhojapatra trees are present in abundance, from these forests many small thick streams originate in the river Bhagirathi, due to the streams and waterfalls here. The beauty of it is worth seeing. At the same time, the paralyzed peaks of snow fascinate throughout the year.
